Sick of getting to an electric vehicle (EV) charging station, only to find the cables have been cut off by thieves looking to steal copper inside? Evie Networks, one of Australia’s largest EV charging providers, is rolling out a solution: CableGuard protectors from a UK company called Formula Space. CarExpert first spotted the cable protectors at Evie’s Chelsea location in Melbourne, and Evie has confirmed it has also introduced CableGuard at five other locations including Toowoomba, Queensland and Bayside, Victoria, with the other locations being in the Dandenong region. It looks like a Mustang, feels like a Mustang, and goes like a Mustang, but is the EcoBoost really a Mustang? After all, modern takes on Ford’s famous muscle car have become synonymous with eight-cylinder power, and that’s nowhere to be seen in this base model. Rather, the entry-level EcoBoost is powered by the same turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine found in the old Focus RS hot hatch. Not very Mustang-y, if you ask me. Australian buyers tend to agree. The EcoBoost accounts for just 10 per cent of Mustang sales locally – where the Blue Oval’s fabled pony car reclaimed…

The 2026 Opel Astra range has made its public debut at the Brussels motor show, shortly after being revealed online by the Stellantis-owned German brand. Like the related Peugeot 308, the Opel (and Vauxhall) Astra gets a refreshed design with some choice technology and trim updates to keep the compact hatch and wagon range competitive with the likes of the Volkswagen Golf and aforementioned Pug. Headlining the changes is the brand’s latest ‘Visor’ design language, which incorporates a permanently illuminated ‘Blitz’ emblem up front, and bolsters the new Intelli-Lux HD adaptive headlights which feature more than 50,000 elements – said…

Taste is subjective. We can quantify things like performance, interior space and efficiency with data, but ugly is just that: ugly. We can’t really measure ugliness, but we know it when we see it. And much like beauty, ugliness is in the eye of the beholder. The CarExpert team will often have spirited discussions about which vehicles look good and which don’t, so here are some of the latter. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. Let’s be clear: we’re not calling any of these vehicles bad. Just ugly. Let’s set…

Australia’s new‑vehicle market hit a new record of 1,241,037 sales in 2025, but behind the breakdown of combustion-powered, hybrid, plug-in hybrid and electric cars, there is data that shows which buyer group was most attracted to which vehicle type. At a high level, buyers are splitting into four distinct camps: battery-electric vehicles (EVs), plug‑in hybrids (PHEVs), hybrids (HEVs), and the still-dominant world of petrol- and diesel-powered vehicles – including mild-hybrids (MHEVs). Based on 2025 volume, that looks like: EVs: 103,270 sales (8.3 per cent of the market) – including just two hydrogen fuel-cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) PHEVs: 53,484 sales (4.3 per cent) – including…

German executive sedans are niche vehicles in Australia, but the BMW 5 Series continues to be one of the best. Edgy, angular exterior styling is what defines the current-generation G60-series executive sedan, which arrived locally roughly two years ago. Not much has changed since then, which means this is still the most diverse 5 Series family to date. Key talking points are, of course, the all-electric i5 models and the beastly M5 performance flagship, which have stolen some of the limelight from the more traditional 5 Series cars. The result is just one non-performance, non-electrified petrol variant – the 520i…

Automakers from all over the world have been tapping China as a production source for years, but we’re now seeing a major shift. The first Chinese-built model from a non-Chinese brand in Australia was the 2004 Volkswagen Polo Classic, but it took a while for such vehicles to be common on our roads. Then, there was a rush of offerings – Tesla switched to Chinese sourcing for our market, and BMW started exporting the iX3 from China, as did Chinese-owned Volvo and Polestar with various models. The Volkswagen T-Roc R has been spied testing ahead of its official unveiling later this year – and its potential Australian showroom arrival in 2028 – as the new performance hero of the second-generation T-Roc small SUV lineup. Regular versions of the new T-Roc – which will continue to rival the Nissan Qashqai, Toyota Corolla Cross and C-HR, and Hyundai Kona – were shown in August 2025, employing mild-hybrid and hybrid powertrains, and the same MQB Evo platform that underpinns the current Volkswagen Golf. While the global reveal included a warmer, sport-focused R-Line variant, the fully fledged T-Roc R performance…

Porsche had a rough 2025, and that’s reflected in the sales figures the company has just released. The luxury sports car maker sold 279,449 cars last year, down 10 per cent from 2024’s 310,718 units. Just two years earlier Porsche notched its best sales numbers ever (320,221). Combined with falling profitability, and a course correction back towards petrol and plug-in hybrid vehicles, new CEO Michael Leiters, who began work on New Year’s Day, has a lot on his plate. Models The Macan (84,328) became the company’s top selling model. The second-generation EV-only Macan accounted for 45,367 or 53.8 per cent…
